Jagannath Ashtakam

A Hymn to Lord Shree Narayan

Shlok (Verse)

Kadācit kālindī-taṭa-vipina-saṅgīta-karavo

Mudābhīrī-nārī-vadana-kamalāsvāda-madhupaḥ

Ramā-śambhu-brahmāmara-pati-gaṇeśārcita-pado

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

Sometimes, He joyfully engages in music in the forests on the banks of the Yamuna,

like a bee tasting the nectar of the lotus-faces of the Gopis.

His feet are worshipped by Lakshmi, Shiva, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesha.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Bhuje savye veṇuṁ śirasi śikhi-piñchaṁ kaṭi-taṭe

Dukūlaṁ netrānte sahacara-kaṭākṣaṁ vidadhate

Sadā śrīmad-vr̥ndāvana-vasati-līlā-paricayo

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

In His left hand, He holds a flute; on His head, a peacock feather; and around His waist, a silken cloth.

From the corners of His eyes, He bestows sidelong glances upon His companions.

He is always known for His pastimes in the divine abode of Vrindavan.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Mahāmbhodhes tīre kanaka-rucire nīla-śikhare

Vasan prāsādāntaḥ sahaja-balabhadreṇa balinā

Subhadrā-madhyasthaḥ sakala-sura-sevāvasarado

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

On the shore of the great ocean, on a golden, beautiful blue mountain,

He resides within a palace with His powerful brother, Balabhadra.

Positioned between them is Subhadra, and He grants the opportunity for service to all the gods.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Kr̥pā-pārāvāraḥ sakala-bhuvana-maṅgala-karo

Mano-jño rāmā-nātho madhura-madhurāmoda-madhuraḥ

Ameyaḥ śrī-vāṇī-vimala-vimalābjaiḥ samanuto

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

He is an ocean of mercy, bestowing auspiciousness upon all the worlds.

He is charming, the lord of Rama (Lakshmi), and His sweet form is filled with delightful fragrance.

He is immeasurable and is praised with the pure lotus-like words of Saraswati.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Rathārūḍho gacchan pathi milita-bhūdeva-paṭalaiḥ

Stuti-prādurbhāvaṁ pratipadam upākarṇya sadayaḥ

Dayā-sindhur bandhuḥ sakala-jagatāṁ sindhu-sutayā

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

Riding on His chariot, He moves along the path, meeting hosts of brahmanas,

Hearing their heartfelt prayers at every step with compassion.

He is an ocean of mercy, the friend of all the worlds, along with the daughter of the ocean (Lakshmi).

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Para-brahmāpīḍaḥ kuvalaya-dalotphulla-nayano

Nivāsī nīlādrau nihita-caraṇo 'nanta-śirasi

Rasānandī rādhā-sarasa-vapur-āliṅgana-sukho

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

He is the crest-jewel of the Supreme Brahman, with eyes like fully blossomed blue lotuses.

He resides on the Blue Mountain, with His feet placed on the head of Ananta.

He is blissful in divine mellows, delighting in the embrace of Radha's luscious form.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Na vai prārthyaṁ rājyaṁ na ca kanakitāṁ bhoga-vibhave

Na yāce 'haṁ ramyāṁ sakala-jana-kāmyāṁ vara-vadhūm

Sadā kāle kāle pramatha-patinā gīta-carito

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

I do not pray for a kingdom, nor for golden wealth and pleasures,

Nor do I ask for a beautiful bride desired by all.

His glories are always sung by the lord of the Pramathas (Shiva), at all times.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.

Shlok (Verse)

Hara tvaṁ saṁsāraṁ drutataram asāraṁ sura-pate

Hara tvaṁ pāpānāṁ vitatiṁ aparāṁ yādava-pate

Aho dīne 'nāthe nihita-caraṇo niścitam idaṁ

Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me

Translation

O Lord of the gods, quickly remove this essence-less world!

O Lord of the Yadus, remove my endless multitude of sins!

Oh, it is certain that His feet are placed upon the lowly and the helpless.

May that Lord of the Universe, Jagannath, be the object of my vision.
