A Hymn to Lord Shree Hanuman
Doha (Couplet)
Śrīguru caran saroj raj nija manu mukuru sudhāri,
Baranaü raghubar bimal jasu jo dāyaku phal cāri.
Translation
Having cleansed the mirror of my mind with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet,
I describe the pure glory of Raghubir, which bestows the four fruits of life.
Doha (Couplet)
Buddhihīn tanu jānike sumirau pavan-kumār,
Bal budhi bidyā dehu mohi harahu kales bikār.
Translation
Knowing myself to be ignorant, I meditate on you, Son of the Wind.
Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove my afflictions and blemishes.

Jay hanumān jñān gun sāgar,
Jay kapīs tihu lok ujāgar.
Translation
Victory to you, O Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue.
Victory to the Lord of Monkeys, who is renowned in all three worlds.

Rām dūt atulit bal dhāmā,
Añjani-putra pavansut nāmā.
Translation
You are the messenger of Ram, the abode of immeasurable strength.
You are known as the son of Anjani and the son of the Wind.

Mahābīr bikram bajraṅgī,
Kumati nivār sumati ke saṅgī.
Translation
Great hero, mighty as a thunderbolt,
You are the remover of evil thoughts and a companion to the wise.

Kānan kuṇḍal kuñcit kesā.
Translation
Golden-hued and splendidly adorned,
With earrings and curly hair.

Hāth bajra au dhvajā birājai,
Kāndhe mūñj janeū sājai.
Translation
In your hands shine a mace and a banner,
And a sacred thread of munja grass adorns your shoulder.

Saṅkar suvan kesarīnandan,
Tej pratāp mahā jag bandan.
Translation
You are an incarnation of Shiva and the son of Kesari,
Your glory and prowess are revered throughout the world.

Bidyāvān gunī ati cātur,
Rām kāj karibe ko ātur.
Translation
Learned, virtuous, and extremely clever,
You are always eager to do Ram's work.

Prabhu caritra sunibe ko rasiyā,
Rām lakhan sītā man basiyā.
Translation
You delight in listening to the stories of the Lord,
With Ram, Lakshman, and Sita residing in your heart.

Sūkṣma rūp dhari siyahi dikhāvā,
Bikaṭ rūp dhari laṅk jarāvā.
Translation
Assuming a subtle form, you appeared before Sita,
And in a terrifying form, you burned Lanka.

Bhīm rūp dhari asur saṅhāre,
Rāmcandra ke kāj saṅvāre.
Translation
Taking a mighty form, you destroyed the demons,
And thus accomplished the mission of Lord Ram.

Lāy sajīvan lakhan jiyāye,
Śrīraghubīr haraṣi ur lāye.
Translation
You brought the Sanjeevani herb and revived Lakshman,
And Shri Raghubir joyfully embraced you.

Raghupati kīnhī bahut baṛāī,
Tum mam priya bharatahi sam bhāī.
Translation
Raghupati praised you greatly, saying,
"You are as dear to me as my brother Bharat."

As kahi śrīpati kaṇṭh lagāvai.
Translation
"The thousand-headed Sheshnag sings your glory,"

Nārad sārad sahit ahīsā.
Translation
Sanaka, Brahma, and other sages,
Narada, Sharada, and the serpent king.

Kabi kobid kahi sake kahā te.
Translation
Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of the directions,
Even poets and scholars cannot fully describe your glory.

Rām milāy rāj pad dīnhā.
Translation
You did a great service to Sugriva,
Introducing him to Ram and giving him the kingdom.

Laṅkesvar bhae sab jag jānā.
Translation
Vibhishana heeded your counsel,
And became the king of Lanka, as the whole world knows.

Līlyo tāhi madhur phal jānū.
Translation
The sun, thousands of leagues away,
You swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.

Prabhu mudrikā meli mukh māhī,
Jaladhi lāṅghi gaye acaraj nāhī.
Translation
Carrying the Lord's ring in your mouth,
It is no wonder that you leaped across the ocean.

Durgam kāj jagat ke jete,
Sugam anugrah tumhare tete.
Translation
All difficult tasks in the world,
Become easy by your grace.

Rām duāre tum rakhvāre,
Hot na ājñā binu paisāre.

You are the guardian at Ram's door,
No one can enter without your permission.

Sab sukh lahai tumhārī saranā,
Tum racchak kāhū ko ḍar nā.

All happiness is found in your refuge,
With you as the protector, there is nothing to fear.

You alone can bear your own radiance,
The three worlds tremble at your roar.

Ghosts and evil spirits do not come near,
When one recites the name of Mahavir.

Japat nirantar hanumat bīrā.
Translation
Diseases are destroyed and all suffering is removed,
By constantly chanting the name of the brave Hanuman.

Man kram bacan dhyān jo lāvai.
Translation
Hanuman frees from all troubles,
Those who meditate on him in thought, word, and deed.

Ram is the supreme ascetic king,
And you accomplish all his tasks.

Whoever brings any other desire to you,
Receives the abundant fruit of life.

Cāroṁ jug paratāp tumhārā,

Your glory extends through all four ages,
Your fame illuminates the entire world.

Asur nikandan rām dulāre.
Translation
You are the protector of saints and sages,
The destroyer of demons and beloved of Ram.

As bar dīn jānakī mātā.
Translation
You are the bestower of the eight siddhis and nine nidhis,
As granted by the boon of Mother Janaki.

Sadā raho raghupati ke dāsā.

You possess the elixir of Ram's name,
And are ever the servant of Raghupati.

By singing your praises, one attains Ram,
And the sorrows of many lifetimes are forgotten.

At the end of life, one goes to Raghubar's abode,
And is born a devotee of Hari.

There is no need to hold any other deity in mind,
Serving Hanuman brings all happiness.

Jo sumirai hanumat balbīrā.
Translation
All troubles are removed, and all pains cease,
For those who remember the mighty Hanuman.

Translation
Victory, victory, victory to you, O Hanuman!
Be merciful to me as a Guru.

Whoever recites this a hundred times,
Is freed from bondage and enjoys great happiness.

Hoy siddhi sākhī gaurīsā.
Translation
Whoever reads this Hanuman Chalisa,
Attains perfection, with Lord Shiva as a witness.

Tulsidas, ever the servant of Hari,
Prays, "O Lord, make your abode in my heart."

Son of the Wind, remover of sorrows, embodiment of blessings,
